It’s been claimed that the real reason One Direction cancelled their Belfast gig on Tuesday night, disappointing thousands of fans, was down to Liam Payne having a backstage meltdown.
The singer was said to have taken ill in the city’s SSE Arena last minute, but sources he in fact had a breakdown and felt suddenly unable to cope with the pressures of fame.
Liam took to Twitter to apologise to the group’s young fans yesterday, along with his band members, writing: “I’m so sorry to everybody I disappointed.”
And an insider to the band has revealed that the axed gig was a culmination of the stress fame has had on the young star over the past number of years.
“The pressures of fame and being on the road for two years have made Liam ill,” they said.
“He was devastated about letting everyone down, especially the fans, but he wasn’t physically able to get on stage. He had a complete meltdown,” they told The Sun.
Last night’s concert in Belfast went ahead, and the band will also perform in the city tonight, with Tuesday’s gig rescheduled for Friday.
Meanwhile, Mullingar’s Niall Horan is set to chat with Eoghan McDermott on his 2fm show today to break his silence on the drama.
