Gay Byrne is currently battling prostate cancer, and it’s now been revealed that he’s doing well. The broadcaster announced last month on his Lyric FM radio show that he would be undergoing tests to determine if his cancer had spread to his back.

Since his diagnosis, the 82-year-old has been laying low in his Ballsbridge home under the care of his wife Kathleen Watkins and their family. While Gay is said to be “doing ok” at the moment, an RTE source revealed that he will not be making his return to the airwaves until the New Year.

Speaking to the Herald the source said, “His show finished up last Sunday for Christmas anyway and there’s no return date yet for when he’ll be back on air but he’s in good form and is in good hands.”

The former Late Late Show host was blessed with good health during his lengthy career on radio and television, and feels that although he’s now struggling with illness, he knows that others are much worse off.

“I’ve had the most wonderful, fantastic, robust, good health all my broadcasting life. It’s my turn now. Many, many people are much worse off,” he said.

We wish Gay and his family a Merry Christmas and good health for 2017.
