TV3 star Alan Hughes may have performed Ireland’s highest profile marriage proposal ever when he popped the question to partner Karl Broderick live on Ireland AM a few months back, but it seems like their actual wedding is going to be much more low key!

The popular couple, who became civil partners back in September 2011 in what was Ireland’s first big same-sex union at the time, are planning to take advantage of our new marriage laws, and officially becoming a married couple this September, on the 4th anniversary of their civil union.

But while that event was a glitzy bash in Dublin’s Mansion House, covered exclusively by VIP magazine and featuring a host of high profile stars, their wedding looks like it’s going to be a much quieter event, if Karl has his say!

Talking to the Herald, Alan revealed that while he was looking forward to a big bash, his partner wasn’t so keen. “I don’t know whether Karl is too pushed on it,” he told The Diary. “I don’t know whether he is going ‘Should myself and yourself just go into a little place and sign it over?’. I would like to do a party, but he is sort of going ‘it’s about us’. I’m more of the party animal,”joked Alan.

Alan and Karl have been together 22 years, and while they are looking forward to being a married couple, Alan admitted that the prospect of them adopting a child is remote. “unfortunately that’s something that has passed us by,” he revealed. “I think we have reached the stage where that is something that is not going to happen for us … Maybe if the referendum happened years ago and we thought it would have been easier to adopt, we might have done it, but not at the moment.”
