Actor Jim Carrey has broken silence about the reported suicide of his on-off Irish girlfriend Cathriona White, paying tribute to her in a touching statement.

There was widespread shock at the news today of the tragic passing of the 28-year-old Tipperary native, who was found dead in her LA home, just days after she split with the Hollywood star.

In his statement, the 53-year-old said: “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona.

“She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her,” he told US TV show Entertainment Tonight.

“We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”

Carrey and the beauty therapist, had been dating on and off since meeting on a film set 2012. They split a few months later but reunited this May.

However, it’s reported that they broke up again on September 24, the day before Cathriona left a worrying cryptic message on Twitter.
