“We ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be confirmed in due course.”

Ciaran and his wife Ann Marie were travelling to watch their son Ruarí play for Cork City in their match against Sligo Rovers on Saturday evening when the two-vehicle accident on the N5 at Ballymiles occurred.

Ann Marie is said to have been treated for non-life-threating injuries at Mayo University Hospital, but unfortunately, Ciaran’s injuries proved fatal.

The driver of the other vehicle and a passenger are understood to have also received treatment for injuries.
