Sophie O’Sullivan has paid a sweet tribute to her mum, Sonia O’Sullivan, after breaking one of the Irish athletics legend’s long-standing records.
The 23-year-old claimed victory in the women’s 1,500m at the National Track and Field Championships in Santry on Sunday, crossing the line in an impressive **4:05.62**.
In doing so, Sophie eclipsed the championship record of **4:07.09** that her mother had held for an incredible 31 years, having set it back in 1995.

Sharing her excitement on Instagram after the race, Sophie celebrated the milestone while giving credit where it was due.
“National champion. Championship record, that’s family business @soniagrith,” she wrote alongside photos from the day.
While Sophie was making history on the track, Sonia was there to witness the special moment, although she was covering the championships as an RTÉ pundit.
The proud mum later shared a photo of Sophie on her own Instagram Stories, simply writing: “Irish National Champ.”
It’s not the first time Sophie has spoken about the encouragement she’s received from her famous mum.
Speaking previously, she revealed that Sonia’s biggest priority has always been her daughter’s happiness.
With a national title under her belt and a championship record now to her name, Sophie will now turn her attention to the upcoming European Championships as she continues to build on an already impressive athletics career.
