It was a great few days for team Ireland at the World Athletic Championships in Budapest, over the past number of days.

There’s one name that comes to mind time and time again when Athletics makes its way back into the minds of the public, Sonia O’Sullivan. But, now it’s her daughter Sophie that is taking the helm and following in her mother’s footsteps.

Sophie took part in the quarter final of the 1500m on Saturday, attempting to qualify for the semi-final later on in the week. The 21-year-old was so close to a qualifying spot but was unfortunately beaten to the final six finishing in eight.

While she didn’t qualify it wasn’t all bad news for the young runner. Sophie managed to beat her personal best time by five seconds, a massive win for the Cork woman as she prepares for a long future in Athletics.

Following her loss Sophie spoke to Virgin Media about preparing for the good and bad things that come with such an experience.

She said: “I said to myself if I do the best that I could, I have to be happy with that and I am.”

With no idea what to expect headed over to Budapest she noted that it was a great experience for her to have at this point in her career so she can learn and continue to improve.

When asked if her biggest fan would be happy with her performance, Sophie said: “She [Sonia] always just wants me to have fun and to be happy so as long as I am she will be.”
