Paul Mescal’s Aftersun wins big at the BIFAs

The 25th British Independent Film Awards was held on Sunday night and our very own Paul Mescal was there in attendance to see his latest movie Aftersun scoop up an impressive seven prizes.

The critically acclaimed drama follows Calum, played by Normal People star Paul, and his daughter Sophie, played by newcomer Frankie Corio, during a holiday in Turkey.

Spanning a 20-year period, the film begins with 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie) on her father-daughter vacation while Celia Rowlson-Hall portrays an adult Sophie culminating with her reflection on that experience in adulthood.

Director, Charlotte Wells, won three awards for the movie which included Best Director, Best Debut Director and Best Screenplay.

The film also won Best British Independent Film which was presented by none other than Paul’s Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones.

The above awards were in addition to three craft BIFAs that Aftersun was previously announced as winning.

Leading the ceremony with 16 nominations, the awards also saw its first year with gender-neutral acting categories.

Upon its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, Aftersun was the winner of the French Touch Jury Prize while most recently, Wells received a breakthrough director prize at the Gotham Awards.

Paul is also up for Best Lead Performance for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards for his role in Aftersun, which is set to take place in the US on Saturday 4th March next year.

While the film has also been nominated for Best First Feature, Best Cinematography for Gregory Oke, and Best Editing for Blair McClendon.
