Paul Mescal attended the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for the first time this year. But despite it only being his debut, the Maynooth man still managed to take home an award.

Winning in the Critics’ Week sidebar, his latest film Aftersun, was honoured with the French Touch prize.

The film follows Sophie as she reflects on a holiday she took with her father 20 years ago. Starring Paul as Calum, Sophie’s father. Along with Frankie Corio as a young Sophie, and Celia Rowlson-Hall, as adult Sophie.

Aftersun was directed and written by Charlotte Wells and received rave reviews from critics at the festival. The release date for the film has yet to be announced.

Paul attended the festival by himself, following rumours, he and girlfriend Phoebe Bridgers are engaged.

The pair went social media official with their relationship last December, however it’s believed that the couple have been dating since 2020.

Engagement rumours began to swirl last month as Phoebe called Paul her ‘fiancé’ while performing on stage at popular music festival Coachella.

The pair seem to split their time between sunny LA and Ireland. The two reportedly spent Christmas together in Ireland with Paul’s family in Kildare. During their time here the two were spotted walking in Dalkey in Dublin.

For now, both Paul and Phoebe are yet to confirm or deny their engagement rumours, but we’re keeping a close eye on Instagram.
