Pat Kenny has been criticised for awkward comments he made about disgraced tennis player Maria Sharapova on Newstalk today.
The radio host was discussing the Russian sports star’s shocking announcement that she has been suspended after she failed a drug test, having tested positive for meldonium. She said she has been taking the drug for health reasons since 2006.
Commenting on the controversy, he said: “Well recover from all your injuries, two years rest, have a baby, or even two, and come at the back of end of it, who knows. That’s a possibility.”
Pat has been slammed on Twitter for joking that his listeners would like to “make babies” with Maria while she has time off – with many commenting that it was particuarly distasteful on International Women’s Day.
“‘A lot of our listeners willing to help Maria Sharapova make babies while she’s banned.” Pat Kenny. WTF?” journalist Kieran Cunningham tweeted.
Other Twitter comments included: “According to Pat Kenny Maria Sharapova should go and have a baby or two.Yep. Happy International Women’s Day folks #Newstalk” and “Jaysus. Pat Kenny as Alan Partridge?”
Meanwhile, some thought the reaction was over the top, with one twitter user posting: “Pat Kenny can’t catch a break with the twitterati in full outrage. Completely ridiculous over reaction from the laptop warriors as usual.”
What do you guys think – inappropriate or political correctness gone mad?!
