Coleen Nolan on being a grandmother, her sisters and dating in the public eye

Coleen Nolan is truly an icon in every sense of the word.

From making musics as part of The Nolan Sisters to keeping us entertained on Loose Women, she has been a staple of entertainment for decades. And now she is ready to plunge into the world of dating publicly in Celebs Go Dating.

Here VIP Magazine chats to Coleen about making the decision to go on the reality show, her years on TV and how important her family is to her…

Hi Coleen, hope you’re keeping well! Tell us about going on Celebs Go Dating!

I am keeping really well, thank you, I am looking forward to the summer, the last few months have been full on filming Celebs Go Dating and Loose Women and touring my new Live show all at the same time. However, it has been so much fun, and I have loved every minute!

Why did you decide to go on the show now?
I watched the last series with Kerry Katona on it, and I was glued. I am a massive fan of Married At First Sight Australia as well, so it was something very different to what I have done before. I have been on the dating apps before, and had some fabulous dates, but not found Mr Right just yet.

You’re very proud of your Irish roots! What is the one thing you have to do when you come to Ireland?
I am the only one in my family not to have been born in Ireland, but I do feel very connected to Ireland. We have great family memories across the country, one amazing memory is playing the 3Arena with my sisters for our reunion tour. It was one of the best things we’ve done. When I’m at home, and I see the Irish Tourism adverts come on the TV with the beautiful scenery and the way the people engage with each other, I always say that is exactly what it is like. I love it.

You’re on Celebs Go Dating, you’re a Loose Woman (if you will) but your start was in music with The Nolans. Do you have a preference to singing or TV?
Both are so different, my family were so surprised when I first went on Loose Women, because it is a topic-led show, and in our family, I am more laid back compared to some of my sisters. This year marks my 25th year at Loose Women. I love it and feel like I have another set of sisters. When it comes to music, it has always been in our house. I first went on stage at two years old, when we used to have the family act, all ten of us, my mum, dad, brothers and sisters. We all love harmonies and have done for years.

You’re back in front of the microphone in a different way now! You have a new podcast. Tell us about that?
Yes, I am so excited to have launched my own podcast with my two adult children, Shane and Ciara. We discuss everything, from parenting to dating, to growing up with parents on telly and public perceptions of us. They are so different, Ciara is like the mother hen, keeping us all in check with one look, she is so dry – it is hilarious! and my son Shane is just great fun, you never know what he is going to come out with, but most of the time, myself and Ciara and laughing.

You must be very close to Shane and Ciara…What is it like working with them?
We are incredibly close! I have worked with them both before on different occasions over the years, the first time for Shane was when he and my other son Jake supported me and sisters on our reunion tour. We have done some great things over the years, from tours to pantomime to ITV competitions. Plus, Ciara has filmed with me at home for Loose Women, doing a cookery demonstration; she is a fantastic cook!

Seeing them all grown up now, how proud of them are you?
In the last year, they have both become parents, both having boys within a couple of weeks of each other. Seeing your own children become parents is fabulous. They are my biggest cheerleaders and I would be lost without them. My other son Jake, lives in London with his wife, Georgia and their son. I see them all the time and babysit when I am needed.
