Mark was one of the first presenters to front the morning show, having appeared on it for nearly 20 years before leaving in July 2019.
However, the television presenter made a surprise return to the hit show on Thursday to talk to Muireann O’Connell and Ray Foley.
Introducing Mark, Muireann jokingly said: “Mark Cagney is here. Look at him there, he’s like, ‘Oh my god I’m so happy I left this place’. ”

“Mark, are you happy to be back?” she questioned him.
The dad of four stayed silent on the matter with Ray laughing and chiming in: “No comment.”
Mark then took his own dig at the Ireland AM crew saying: “Haven’t done much with the place, have you?”
Muireann, however, decided to jump back in, calling Ray and Mark out for wearing similar outfits.
“Well, it’s the uniform – the double denim. Not many people can carry it off, as you can see,” Mark joked, as he gestured to Ray.
Mark then reflected back on his time on the show, sharing: “Three hours a day, five days a week, 11 months a year for 20 years. If I’d have killed somebody, I would’ve been free sooner.
“It was lovely. I get asked this all the time and the stock answer, it sounds like it’s trite, but find what you love, hopefully with people you really get on with.
“Then you come into a job where you learn something new every day and you meet somebody new every day. What’s not to like?”
