James Patrice: “Growing up I was painfully shy”

James Patrice Butler

When James Patrice enters a room he is the life and soul of the party.

He is, by all accounts, a gas man.

We joke about his drag persona Malahide Woman and how he’s not shy to turn heads when he’s all glammed up. Out of drag, James stands an impressive 6′2″ with heels and his wig he towers at 6′9″.

“It’s interesting,“ he confesses about going out in public as Malahide Woman, as we chat at this year’s Platinum VIP Style Awards launch.

We joke that he must not have a shy bone in his body. But James is quick to tell us that’s not true.

Growing up I was painfully shy,“ he admits.

My parents put me into speech and drama when I was five because I was mute. I wouldn’t talk to anyone, I wouldn’t have the craic, I wouldn’t engage with anyone.

He goes on to explain: They put me in to loosen me up,“ before joking that it might have worked too well.

Even in school I was very shy. But it was acting that had me coming out of my shell. I always say it as someone else doing it not me. So that was my gateway into having fun and experimenting and exploring bits.

Now? I’m not as shy,“ he laughs.
