Dáithí Ó Sé prepares to hit milestone birthday

Daithi O Se

Dáithí Ó Sé is in flying form at this year’s Platinum VIP Style Awards.

And sure, why wouldn’t he be when he was awarded Most Stylish Man sponsored by Hayu! Isn’t he awful dapper altogether?

He has two weeks left before The Today Show finishes up for the summer. But not the only thing he’s counting down.

No, this summer the Kerryman will celebrate his 50th birthday.

Most Stylish Man – Daithi O Se

“My summer plans are to take it easy for June. Then there may be a few things coming in July, but in August, I am heading up to Clonmany for the fair for two days. I’m looking forward to that. I’m heading to Belfast for the Fleadh Ceol to record six programmes for TG4. The Sunday after we finish there, I drive straight down to meet all the Roses. Then the Rose of Tralee and after that, God knows!” he tells us on the red carpet of his plans for the summer.

He’s a busy man, telling us that he won’t find the time going until he’s back under the dome presenting The Rose of Tralee.

“It flies in the door every year and it gets faster.”

But he won’t be taking it too easy next month, sharing: “I’m 50 now in June, we’ll have to have a bit of a party at some stage. I’ll go home, so we might have a few parties. And if Kerry are the All-Ireland champions, we might go down a few times.”

We joke that he’s practically a Galway man at this point, as that is where he lives with his wife Rita and their son 12-year-old, Micheál Óg.

“I’m only exiled there,” he teases, with a glint in his eye.

“I’m in Galway about 28 years, I’ve been in Galway longer than I’ve been in Kerry! Thankfully, I’ve fell into a lovely community. But it’s all hurling country around where I am, so I’m safe enough as a Kerry man there.”

His home away from home is The Today Show studio in Cork, where he presents the show five days a week alongside Maura Derrane and Sinéad Kennedy. Sinéad is back after welcoming her second child, Theo.

“The gang is back together. It’s always lovely. We’ve been very, very lucky. This is season 14. The viewing figures have been very, very high, the highest so far,” he shares.

“We try to keep it light, we try to keep it fun. There’s a lot of crazy things happening in the world right now, and we try to keep that away from us, to let people know The Today Show is a fun place to be, a happy place to be. It’s a place where you can forget about your woes for a small while away.”
