Broadcaster Charlie Bird has shared a public thank you to the two women who comforted him while he was shopping in Dublin.

Taking to Twitter to share his thoughts, Charlie began by saying that this is a hard tweet for him to share.

“This is a difficult tweet for me to send,” he said.

Continuing on, Charlie wrote:

“I want to thank the two ladies who comforted me in Dunnes Stores in Cornelscourt this afternoon.”

Charlie explained that certain moments of extreme emotion are a direct symptom of his motor neuron disease.

“I was having one of my awful crying moments, which is a symptom of my MND. The hand of friendship helped me so much”

Charlie was diagnosed with the neurological just last October. Since then he has gone above and beyond to not allow the disease to define him.

He has spent the last year sharing his experience of the disease as well as raising money for research on the illness.

Over the last 11 months, he has climbed Croagh Patrick, raised almost €3.4 million for Pieta House and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, and released a documentary educating viewers on MND.

Recently, Charlie has been open and honest online about his struggles. Sharing that he is now in a more positive place and looking ahead to the future he said:

“I want to thank everyone for extending the hand of friendship. I am really struggling at present and emotionally.

‘This time last year I didn’t think I would make my 73rd birthday but just over a week to go I will. Roll on Christmas and Brucie. Thanks, everyone, the love is amazing.”

Charlie will celebrate his 73rd this week, on Friday the 9th of September.
