Clannad singer Moya Brennan has passed away

Moya Brennan, who is best known as the lead singer of the Irish group Clannad, has sadly passed away at the age of 73.

The singer was surrounded by her family and friends when she passed peacefully.

Moya is best known for her work with Celtic folk group Clannad, the Grammy and BAFTA-winning band.

The eldest of nine children, Moya grew up in Gaoth Dobhair in the Donegal Gaeltacht.

She performed alongside her brothers, Pól and Ciarán and their uncles Noel and Pádraig Ó Dúgáin in the local area.

After winning the Letterkenny Folk Festival in 1973, they embarked on a tour around the globe.

It was 1982 when they were really cemented into the global zeitgeist, when they performed the theme song of the miniseries Harry’s Game.

Clannad also became the first band to perform in Irish on Top of the Pops.

From there, their music was featured in the film Patriot Games, and was part of a Volkswagen advertising campaign in the US.

Moya’s sister Eithne, also known as Enya, spent several years with Clannad before pursuing a solo career.

The band released their 30th and final album, Nádúr in 2013.
