Charlie Bird to appear in final documentary

Over the course of his career, Charlie Bird was known for his incredible storytelling and documentaries.

Charlie stepped away from TV in 2016 but continued to work on several projects close to his heart.

Of course, in recent years he has been raising awareness around Motor neurone disease after he confirmed his own diagnosis in 2021.

And now his final documentary will air later this year.

Ransom ’79 is a documentary by Charlie Bird.

The blurb for the film reads: “Diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, legendary Irish news reporter Charlie Bird is determined to break one final story before his life is ended by the brutal advance of that cruel disease.”

The synopsis describes the documentary: “Charlie, through his contacts, has unearthed an extraordinary true crime story, one that had remained secret for more than forty years.

“Despite having to communicate through voice-bank technology, and with his faculties and mobility diminishing as the story progresses, the dogged journalist in Charlie still endures.

“The film is an exploration of how one man who is facing his own mortality can find respite in doing the thing he loves, even in the most terrible of circumstances.”

There is no release date for the documentary just yet but it is expected to air early this year.
