The nominations for the Academy Awards are in, and it’s official – we have lots of Irish talent to cheer on this year.
First up, Brooklyn and Room have both been given the nod in the Best Film category, but will face some stiff competition, including hotly-tipped flicks The Revenant and Bridge of Spies.
Kerry actor Michael Fassbender is nominated in the Best Actor category for his role in Steve Jobs, alongside Hollywood royalty such as Leonardo di Caprio and Eddie Redmayne. He was previously acknowledged with the Best Supporting Actor nom in 12 Years a Slave.
Furthermore, Saoirse Ronan may scoop the Best Actress gong for her acclaimed performance in Brooklyn, although there’s been plenty of excited talk about Brie Larson in Room in recent days. Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett and Charlotte Rampling are also nominated in the same category.
This is also Saoirse’s second Oscar nod, as she was previously given the honour at the tender age of 13 for her role in Atonement. In addition to Best Actress and Best Picture, Brooklyn is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Meanwhile, Dubliner Lenny Abrahamsson, who previously directed What Richard Did, has been given the nod for Best Director for Room. He’s up against talented peers Alejandro G Inarritu, Tom McCarthy, Adam McKay and George Miller in his bid to win.
In total his movie has received four nominations – as well as Best Picture and Best Actress, Emma Donoghue, who missed out on a Golden Globe last week, has been nominated for her adapted screenplay for the film.
Who do you think will walk away a winner? The big night takes place on 28 February 2016 and will be hosted by Chris Rock. We can’t wait!
