Ireland AM star Alan Hughes has branded comedic Oliver Callan a “bitter old queen” for slagging off his live tv proposal earlier this week.

Alan got down on one bended knee on the TV3 show to propose to long-term partner Karl Broderick on Monday, which Oliver referred to as “self-promotion”.

The funnyman wrote in his newspaper column: “That gay people, amid a supposed spirit of equality, are now choosing to mimic any ghastly wedding custom is embarassing. After years of celebrating difference, it turns out they want to be as bland and crass as everyone else.”

However, the presenter is not one bit happy with the comedian, who famously told the world he is gay on the Saturday Night Show, claiming his comments are hypocritical.

“This is coming from the guy who came out on a Saturday night chat show? If that’s not attention-seeking I don’t know what is,” he fumed to the Irish Daily Mirror.

“He obviously needs to sell tickets for his tour but if that’s the type of bitter old queen we have in Ireland then I don’t know. I pity his boyfriend. Oliver needs a reality check.”

Alan explained after asking the big question that he proposed as he “just felt it was the right time with the week that’s in it, with the passing of the Marriage Bill.”

“Karl proposed to me after Celebrity Salon and I just felt this was the right time to make my feelings clear to him – and what better place than the Ireland AM set, which is very much like home, surrounded by my TV family,” he said.

VIP covered the couple’s civil partnership back in 2011, which was the first high profile ceremony in the country at the time. They have been together for 22 years.
