Jason Smyth on the sacrifices he made to win DWTS

Jason Smyth went from strength to strength on the Dancing with the Stars dancefloor this year.

So it was no surprise that he and his professional partner, Karen Byrne, picked up the Glitterball Trophy this year.

Now he is back at home in Derry with his family, his wife Elise and two daughters, eight-year-old Evie and five-year-old Lottie. But we got him to return to Dublin for a fabulous shoot for VIP Magazine’s April issue.

Speaking about his time on the iconic RTÉ show, he says: “Obviously I wanted to go on Dancing with the Stars to raise awareness for visual impairment, but it was also for them. This is something they could get involved in, something they could enjoy. They loved watching me on stage each week in glittery costumes, seeing me go on to lift the trophy, and now, they get to play dress up here today.”

And play dress-up his two girls did as they stole the show on our shoot! For the first time in over two and a half months, Jason’s been able to spend some proper quality time with his family.

“We sacrificed a lot. I was in Dublin, they were back home. We never knew if I’d be back on Monday morning or if it’d be another week apart. They came to visit when they could, but it’s not the same,” he tells us.

“My wife Elise, she’s great. None of this would have been possible without her. She held down the fort, she took on both of our roles. She’s a superhero.”
