“I’m on a Gaeilge high”: Louise Cantillon chats podcast goals and new radio show

It was no surprise that Louise Cantillon picked up Most Stylish Newcomer Sponsored by Very at this year’s Platinum VIP Style Awards.

At the start of the year, she landed the lunchtime slot on Today FM, she and her best pals Síomha Ní Ruairc and Doireann Ní Ghlacáin have one of the country’s favourite podcasts, How to Gael and she’s working tirelessly on TG4.

We caught up with her at the awards, where she made sure to make a statement in her Helen Cody gúna.

She tells us she’s on a “Gaeilge high” at the minute.

The Today FM presenter is just off the back of her podcast’s first sold-out live show.

“It’s been amazing. We did our first live show and on the Friday of that week, I went on the road with TG4 for two weeks for a new travel show,” she gushes.

“So I haven’t come down, I’ve been on a Gaeilge high! I couldn’t imagine anything better than that. The live show was just great.”

And she’s eager to make sure that everyone knows that “Gaeilge is for all”!

And we have to agree!

“Everyone use their cúpla focal, far and wide. Whatever you have, it’s the best way to make it accessible. Every time I’m on air, I try to get in at least one sentence as Gaeilge every couple of minutes.”

Speaking of her new radio show, she is so excited to see it grow.

“My brand new show is only four months old, would you believe?” she explains – and we can’t! She has become such a staple of the station!

“I have been on Today FM for the bones of two years, so I feel like I’ve never not been there. So that is such a lovely feeling and it makes doing your job much easier. It’s the best show! It’s on at the best time of the day, it’s a light lunchtime show, a bit of Gaeilge, the best listeners in the world.

“Everyone seems to be really nice! Obviously, other radio hosts sometimes have mixed response, listeners will tell them they don’t like their style and stuff. But I have had a really positive response, I’m actually obsessed with everyone who listens. I took two weeks off to film with TG4 and I had FOMO from my own show!”

We can’t wait to see what the rest of 2024 has for Louise.

And she teases something big is coming…watch this space.
