Louise McSharry has opened up about the possibility of elongating her maternity leave so she can spend more time with her new bundle of joy when she gives birth later this year.

Unfortunately for the broadcaster, extended leave won’t be a possibility due to industry pressures.

The RTE star told Evoke.ie that she plans to be back to work four months after giving birth.

She said,”It’s hard to gauge [how long I will take off], because I don’t know anything about having babies and at the end of the day every situation is different.

“Who knows what is going to happen? But in my head I’m not planning on taking a massive amount of time off. I would be thinking of going on maternity leave in September and hopefully back in January.”

Although Louise would love to spend more time with the new arrival, she says that in the industry, she can’t afford to be absent for too long.

She said, “I’ll work up until as late as I can. I’d love to [take longer] but I can’t. It’s not an option for me. I’d love to take loads of time, but when you work in this industry you have to keep working.”

She’ll be sorely missed regardless of how long she’s off the air.
