Gay Byrne has opened up about his battle with cancer and admitted there are some times he just wants to give up.
The legendary broadcaster has said that he tries his best to stay strong and keep going.
“What choice have I got? You either fight, or you lie down and die.
“Believe me, there are some days when you want to lie down and die, every cancer sufferer in the country will tell you that.
“But you do the best you can — and follow the treatment,” he told the Irish Sun.
Gay took time off his radio show on Lyric FM after his initial diagnosis in 2016.
And while listeners certainly miss him on the air, the 86-year-old said it’s unlikely he’ll return soon.
“It would have been a lot of work for Eithne (the show’s producer) because I can’t do as much. But I have decided now, I won’t be back this time. I’m just not up to it. Maybe in January?”
The star previously opened up about regretting working so much.
“I do have great regrets…I have only brief little snatches of memories ofCrona and Suzy growing up. I regretthat,” he told Ray D’Arcy on his RTE radio show.
“Generally speaking, I regret now the amount of time I gave to this place, you know? It was an awful lot of time and I should have taken time to do other things and I had the opportunity to do other things but I was dedicated to the place.”
