Ciarán Hinds has been showing a very different side to himself in RTÉ’s latest comedy, The Dry.

Writer Nancy Harris and director Paddy Breathnach were eager to have him on-board despite comedy not being something Ciarán is known for. And they were blown away when he was immediately on board.

Speaking to VIP Magazine, Paddy tells us: “One of the common things he brings to all his characters is the humanity. He was very happy to take the role on. He read the script and we were delighted.”

However, they admit he had one question before signing on.

“He had one question – the sex scene. There’s a scene off Grafton Street where he is having sex with his mistress behind a bin,” Paddy confesses.

“He asked, ‘Would a man of my age really do this?’ And we had to convince him to do it. He wasn’t resistant to it, he just wanted to know why. It was behind a bin and it was film sex! It’s very funny. His real wife, Hélène Patarot, plays his mistress in the show.”

Paddy went on to explain that they also had an intimacy coordinator on set that really helped make sure everything went smoothly.

We had an intimacy coordinator, Sue Mythen, I hadn’t worked with one before so I was a bit nervous about it. But she was absolutely fantastic and brought a huge amount to the show,” he tells us.

“To be honest, from a selfish point of view, I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to shoot, but it was the reverse. The scenes I shot with Sue became better because of her presence and because of her talents. She’s trained in things that I’m not trained in. It was great. It was a really good thing.”

The Dry airs on Wednesday at 9.35pm on RTE One and the RTE Player.
