Ryan Tubridy has spoken out after his friend and colleague Gay Byrne revealed he was suffering from cancer yesterday.

The broadcasting legend shocked listeners when he announced that he’s suffering with prostate cancer on his Lyric FM show yesterday afternoon.

“I shall not be with our listeners on this day next week.” he said. “Have to go to hospital this week, they think they may have discovered a bit of cancer in the prostate and they think it may have moved up into my back.”

Ryan has opened up about the moment he heard the heartbreaking news.

“There I was sitting in my kitchen listening to Gay on his programme on a Sunday, as I do,” he said on his RTE Radio 1 show this morning.

“He said it in very casual terms and was very understated in how he spoke about it.

“Look at the front covers of the papers today. I wish him and the family well and may he receive the best of care,” he continued.

“Gay is a trooper, a fighter, a survivor.”

Speaking about Gay’s heart attack last December, The Late Late Show host commended the 82-year-old for still getting out and about.

“Let’s face it, he’s had a tough year after last December and I often see him out and about at events. He is remarkable.”

Our thoughts are with Gay, Kathleen and their family at this difficult time.
