Ryan Tubridy has paid tribute to the first ever host of The Late Late Toy Show, Gay Byrne ahead of the show’s screening tonight.

Gay recently announced that he’s suffering with prostate cancer to listeners of his Lyric FM show.

“I shall not be with our listeners on this day next week.” he said. “Have to go to hospital this week, they think they may have discovered a bit of cancer in the prostate and they think it may have moved up into my back.”

The broadcasting legend has been inundated with support since making the announcement, and his successor and pal Ryan has said that The Late Late Toy Show team are thinking about the show’s original host at the moment.

“We have been in touch and he seems to be OK.” he told The Irish Sun. “We are keeping an eye on him as he is an extraordinary person and he started all of this.

“I think the form is good. And we are all thinking about him enormously, as a team and an organisation and as a friend.”

However, the talk show host said that it would be “unlikely” that they would send a message to Gay live on air tonight.

“That sort of message would be unlikely during the show because that’s something I would do on a very personal basis with him as a friend.” he said.
