Sporting greats Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki had a very public break-up, after calling off their engagement in 2014.
Now, three years on, as Rory is preparing to say ‘I do’ with his love Erica Stoll, he’s revealed exactly why things didn’t work out between himself and his former flame.
Speaking to the Independent.ie the Co. Down native said that he once thought that finding someone who was in the celebrity sporting world was necessary, but instead he found that it’s actually the opposite, “Because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world,” he said.
The golfer said that the normality of Erica’s life is part of what makes them work and what attracted him to her. There’s “no show” between them, it’s all real.
“I found it refreshing being with someone who was living a normal life rather than, ‘Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late!’ I don’t feel Erica wants to change me in any way. I can be myself around her,” he said.
The couple are set to tie the knot this year.
