Rory McIlroy shares how fatherhood has changed him for the better

Rory McIlroy is one of the biggest golfers in the world, but he has revealed that his biggest achievement is becoming a father.

The Co Down man welcomed his first child with his wife, American Erica Stoll two years ago, a daughter called Poppy.

Speaking about how life has changed after becoming a father, he shared some powerful and sweet words.

He chatted to RTE Radio 1’s Sunday Sport about defending his CJ Cup title in South Caroline over the weekend, he confessed: “I’m a father now so that’s different.”

“Going back to those first moments. Those firsts keep happening, it’s not as if they ever really stop, and there are firsts all the way into the teenage years and beyond,” Rory said of being a father.

“All those firsts, and looking forward to bath time and going into their room in the morning and getting them up out of bed. Just all that stuff that you would sort of take for granted.

“The one thing I have said since I’ve had a child – I always thought I had an appreciation for my parents but it gives me much more of an appreciation for my parents.”

Rory and Erica welcomed Poppy Kennedy McIlroy on August 31 2020 and clearly, the golfer is a doting father.

The couple tied the knot in a stunning wedding in April 2017 in the highly sought-after five-star Ashford Castle in Cong, County Mayo.
