It’s not every day your son gets nominated for an Oscar so when the moment actually came for Paul Mescal’s mother Dearbhla it’s safe to say she was feeling all sorts of emotions.

Speaking to Ray D’Arcy on RTÉ Radio One, Dearbhla explained how she was “folding the washing” when she learned that Paul had been nominated for Best Actor for his role in Aftersun.

It was only when she checked the family WhatsApp group that she realised what was happening.

“I don’t watch them [Oscar nomination announcements] because I find them way too stressful,” the mother of three revealed.

“I was folding washing. I just waited for the Whatsapp. We have this Whatsapp group and there were shocked faces and crying eyes.”

“For me, to see his face and to see him so shocked and so joyous, I’m so grateful,” she added.

It’s clear Dearbhla was full of pride for her son, but getting to see her children’s three faces was just as much of a celebration for both her and her husband.

“The fact that I got to see their three faces today, the love they have for each other as siblings is second to none, I’m very happy.”

Of course, Paul’s father, who is also called Paul couldn’t be prouder of his son and all his achievements.

“It was always such an occasion and even with Irish people like Brenda Fricker and Liam Neeson and all those people and now for our child to be to be in with those,” he chimed in.

As well as his Oscar nomination, Paul is also up for Best Actor at the BAFTAs which will take place in February.

G’wan Paul!
