Rory Cowan has landed himself a role on much-loved soap opera, Fair City.

The star, who’s best known for his work on Mrs Brown’s Boys, is set to play the character of John Bosco Walsh.

He’ll will make his Carrigstown debut this Sunday, when John will arrive at the O’Brien’s home to care for Rose, who is battling dementia, as Molly no longer can.

The role is of particular significance for Rory, as he cared for his own mother Ester during her struggle with dementia until her passing in 2018.

The 60-year-old believes that being given the opportunity to play such a poignant role is a gift from his late mother.

‘I never took any career advice from my mother but I believe she has given me two gifts through her dementia,” Rory told Extra.ie.

‘I have a book coming out this year which is called Mrs Cowan’s Boys and is a very personal account of her struggles.

‘And now I get this job in Fair City where we can effectively highlight the day to day struggles that face a family dealing with dementia.’

Rory has since revealed that he has turned down a number of other opportunities in order to take on this role.

‘I had been offered this year’s panto but I turned it down and I turned down Gogglebox as well,’ he said.

‘When RTE decided to tackle the subject matter on Fair City in what will ultimately be a long running storyline I knew I had to do it.’
