We think he’ll be great!

The past two years have proved rather difficult for Marty Morrissey since the beloved loss of his mum, Peggy.

Peggy was tragically killed in a car crash during a storm in December 2021, something he still struggles to come to terms with.

Speaking to the RTÉ Guide, Marty spoke about how she was his “biggest supporter” but someone who always kept him grounded.

Despite being two years since the accident, Marty confessed that he finds it especially difficult when he returns to the family home in Clare.

“It’s a little different now. The house is quite cold. I found the first year very difficult,” he shared.

“I was a little bit better last year but I still expect to see my mom smiling, waiting for me when I open the door.

“Grief doesn’t leave you. You get on with what you have to do but it doesn’t leave you that quickly or easily,” he added.

“Your mom is your mom and your dad is your dad and you’re losing a life partner. I always said I was lucky to have Mom for the last 17 years after Dad died. I got to know her more over that time.”

Marty also touched on the “difficult” year working at RTE after he made an “error of judgement” when he accepted a loan of a car from Renault for more than five years.

“2023 was a difficult one right across the organisation,” he said.

“RTE is full of very talented and creative people who do great work.

“I have no doubt that the organisation in the coming years will be very different, but hopefully much stronger as a result of the experience of last year.”
