He hosted The Late Late Show for almost four decades, and now Gay Byrne has revealed what kept him going through all those years – a weekly dinner of egg and chips!

We definitely weren’t expecting that answer…

Gay admitted that his meal choice became somewhat of a ritual, and he consciously didn’t change it up before going live.

“Every Friday religiously we went in the canteen and the basic meal we had was two fried eggs and a plate of chips,” the 81-year-old said.

“It was called self-protection and because anything could happen in the RTE canteen and we had a show that night, to be on the safe side it was two fried eggs.

“I mean, how do you screw up two fried eggs and chips? That’s all we had. That’s how I survived on The Late Late Show on a Friday night!”

Speaking on the Seven O’Clock Show, he also revealed his favourite ever guests while in the iconic presenting role – comedians Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, as well as English actor and filmmaker Peter Ustinov.

Gaybo, who brings his one-man stage show to Tallaght today, also said he is as busy as ever with RTE’s The Meaning Of Life and his radio show on Lyric FM.
