Gay Byrne has sadly passed away, aged 85.

The acclaimed broadcaster, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago, has sadly lost his battle against the disease.

Known and loved by thousands, the tv star will be remembered by wife Kathleen, their children Crona and Suzy, and their grandkids.

Gay became a household name, when he began working on RTE’s Late Late Show in the 60’s. He continued to work there for a further 37 years, until he retired in 1999.

Paying tribute to Gay, RTÉ Director-General, Dee Forbes, said,  “We are all greatly saddened by the passing of Gay Byrne. He was an exceptional broadcaster whose unique and ground-breaking style contributed so much to the development of radio and television in this country.

“Gay’s journalistic legacy is as colossal as the man himself – he not only defined generations, but he deftly arbitrated the growth and development of a nation.

“Ireland grew up under Gay Byrne, and we will never see his like again. My deepest sympathies to Kathleen and his family.”

Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time.
