Republic of Telly star and comedian Joanne McNally has opened up to VIP about being adopted and reaching out to her biological parents.
In this month’s magazine, out today, we met the tv comic for an exclusive photoshoot and interview, and she revealed her attempts to get to know her birth mum and dad.
Speaking to VIP, Joanne told us about growing up in an adopted family:
“I love my adoptive parents hugely,” she said. “Being adopted was the most normal thing in the world. Mum and dad made us feel like we were the most special people.”
Joanne says she became curious about her birth parents, and because she “had a bit of a show pony” in her, she imagined them to be Linda Martin and Johnny Logan and all her siblings to be the Billie Barry kids.
“Then I found out my mum worked in insurance. I was like: ‘That’s not it. That’s definitely not it. My biological father is an electrician.”
She added that when she met her birth mum, she was disappointed they didn’t look similar to each other, but their personalities matched straight away.
Meanwhile, she revealed she’s the ‘image’ of her birth father – but she’s never met him.
“He lives in Australia. I emailed him twice, a year ago, and I never heard anything from him and he only got back to me for the first time the other day. I didn’t think he was that interested, and it didn’t really bother me, but now he’s saying he is, so we’ll see.
“You have to take these things really slowly,” she added.
