Earlier this year, Dominique Nugent shared her ulcerative colitis diagnosis, an inflammatory bowel disease.
Speaking to STELLAR Magazine, she admitted that she wasn’t sure how to speak about her diagnosis originally.
“It’s an invisible illness. I feel like because people thought I looked well, if I said I was sick it would nearly be brushed off.”
She chose to share her story as she felt like other people could benefit from hearing that they were not alone. In doing so, it also sunk in that the illness was real.
Going on medication was “a lot to deal with at the start”, she admits adding that she will be on them for the rest of her life.
“That was a lot to deal with at the start. I remember going to the chemist and coming out with bags of different medications. I was like ‘Oh my god I’m a sick person.’,” she confessed.
“It was kind of a shock to the system.”
She explained that she now has to self-inject every two weeks as she is on a “biological drug”.
Dominique is feeling “lucky” as she has been told that she is now “in remission”.
