Documentary en route about Irish author Edna O’Brien

Edna O’Brien

It was a heartbreaking day in the Irish literary scene with Edna O’Brien passed away.

The Irish author died in July at the age of 93.

She had an incredible life, her books were groundbreaking and she was truly a trailblazer in all aspects.

To celebrate her life a documentary, Blue Road: The Edna O’Brien Story, is set to air.

In 1960, a young Edna O’Brien wrote a sexually frank debut novel, The Country Girls and she became a literary sensation.

This new documentary will explore Edna’s identity as one of her generation’s most controversial women, as she undertakes her final camera interview and describes what it is to know there is little time left. As she grapples with the traumas of her past, she also reveals what it is to be an artist and to refuse categorisation.

The docufilm will share never-before-seen excerpts from her personal journals which will be read aloud by Oscar-nominated actress Jessie Buckley, as we bear witness to the denigration she endured as an Irish woman and artist.

Additional perspectives are offered from Gabriel Byrne, Walter Mosley and an array of renowned writers, including Booker Prize winner Anne Enright and poet Doireann Ní Ghríofa.

The documentary will hit Sky and NOW TV in 2025.
