Tv presenter and fashionista Darren Kennedy has spoken out about gay marriage being legalised earlier this year, claiming the vote will save lives.
Darren (34) said that in the days leading up to the referendum he was very emotional, as the result would have a massive impact on not just his life, but so many others in the country. The RTE star has been with his partner Aidan Harney for 12 years now and says having a family of his own is “definitely on the back burner”.
“For every gay person in Ireland there was a cost because our ways of life were being questioned on the radio, everywhere, which is a peculiar thing to happen to you. It’s like, ‘Hold on a minute, you’re talking about me.’
“One of the real benefits, I would say, is that lives have been saved. Far too many gay and lesbian people -who are young and who identify as being different and who don’t have any point of reference for that -have taken their own lives. That gives me chills.”
He added: “It’s great to see that in such a short space of time we’ve gone from questionable legal scenarios with regards gay people to avant garde human rights on a global level. I think the question that was asked and the resounding result shows that as a society we’re more accepting, we’ve moved on. People just want people to be happy.”
Darren also opened up to the Irish Daily Mail’s ‘You’ magazine about his busy year, which saw him mingling with stars like Harry Style and David Gandy.
