With news that the National Ploughing Championships are to be cancelled again this year it has people wondering about another of our annual festivals, the Rose of Tralee.

Dáithí Ó Sé has opened up about his thoughts on the likelihood of it going ahead. The event, which is usually on in August is still unconfirmed for 2021, but Dáithí has shared that it could be pushed back until later in the year.

Speaking with The Irish Mirror he said; “What I’ve heard is it won’t be happening during the summer anyway, because of the way things are. But they are looking at October.”

Dáithí, who has hosted the show for over a decade, is eager for it to go ahead as he is aware how vital it is for the local community; “For somewhere like Tralee and the surrounding towns, it is worth about €10million for the economy. So it is a big deal.”

“They have to say something. Genuinely they are trying to work something out. They were trying to work something out this time last year for October as it happened, but then it just became clear that it wasn’t going to happen.”

Continuing he added; “So they are going to be thrashing it out at the moment and the logistics. There’s uncertainty.”

Although he was unable to give any definitive time frame he revealed that he is all for the festival going ahead this year;  “I’m kinda putting pressure on them to say, ‘Look, let me know what is happening because I need to talk to people and people need to know what is happening and people want to know what is happening, because they are interested in it’.”

“But I’d imagine, they’ll be saying something in the next day or two,” he added.
