
Irish-born New Zealand actor Sam Neill sadly passed away at the age of 78 in Sydney, Australia on Monday.
A statement shared on his social media, read: “It is with immense sadness that the whānau (extended family) of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July 2026 in Sydney, Australia.
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.

“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
Sam is best known for his role in Jurassic Park as Dr Alan Grant.
He also starred in the first two seasons of Peaky Blinders as senior police officer Major Chester Campbell who was trying to bring down Cillian Murphy’s character, Tommy Shelby and the entire Shelby family.
The Cork actor paid tribute to his former co-star, saying: “Like everyone who knew and worked with Sam, I admired him and adored him in equal measure. He was one of the kindest, funniest and gentlest people, and one of the finest actors. RIP.”

Fellow Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole simply wrote: “Rest in peace big dog.”
Annabelle Wallis, who worked closesly with Sam in the show, wrote: “Thank you, Sam, for the memories. I will never forget your kindness and loving heart. My heart goes out to your family and all those who love you. You will be missed.”

Sam’s Jurassic Park co-star Laura Dern shared a heartfelt tribute which read: “Sam was my beloved lifetime friend… He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness, and love, always with the driest of wit.
“He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.”
