Brendan Gleeson and Cillian Murphy’s hit zombie movie, 28 Days Later has been named the greatest horror movie of the 21st century by Rolling Stone magazine.

The 2002 movie tells the story of a societal breakdown following the accidental release of a highly contagious virus and focuses on how the survivors struggle to cope with the destruction of the life they once knew.

Brendan and Cillian both had starring roles in this film and have starred in several movies together since.

28 Days Later won the prestigious title of greatest horror movie of the 21st century because of the juxtaposition it drew between the real world in 2002 and the fantasy world.

“As with many great horror movies, Danny Boyle’s eviscerating zombie thriller grew out of real-world terrors.” a spokesperson for the magazine told the Irish Mirror.

28 Days Later focused on a handful of survivors including Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris trying to stay a step ahead of unstoppable hordes of rampaging undead.

“In the wake of 9/11’s jolting tragedy, this prescient horror film also spoke to unconscious anxieties about a world in which simmering tensions and seething paranoia felt like a terrible new normal,” they continued.

“Zombie- apocalypse tales, things-that-go-bump-in-the-psyche ghost stories, retro-slasher flicks, neo-giallo nuggets, J-horror, K-horror, French extreme and Hollywood franchise films that have spooked us, shook us and scared us s**tless since 2000.”

We think 28 Days Later is definitely a worthy winner!
