Pippa O’Connor has opened up about her eldest son Ollie heading off to school for the first time.

The 5-year-old is heading into Junior Infants and Pippa admits she’s pretty emotional about it.

The businesswoman and blogger says she’s glad she waited until now to send him to school.

“Ollie is really looking forward to starting School in September. We considered sending him last year at 4 and a half but we decided to wait another year, so by now he is really ready for it and is asking lots of questions,” she told VIP Magazine in this months issue.

“We live close by to his new school so it’s nice that when we drive by he’s getting familiar with it. I’m sure with excitement there will be nerves too – about meeting new friends, having a new teacher and everything else that goes with it.”

“Without going on about it too much I would say things like “you’re going to love your new school and making new friends”. I’ve told him we will go to pick his new school bag, pencil case and lunch box soon – so he’s excited for that part too.”

Pippa and her husband Brian Ormond have two children together, Ollie and 2-year-old Louis, and the busy mum admitted she will find it tough.

“I think I’ll be the emotional one, to be honest. Although he’s been in pre-school it feels like such a big deal sending your baby to big school. The thoughts of him in a uniform and tie put a lump in my throat.

“It feels very grown up and I suppose you feel emotional because it’s like a big step out of baby years! It makes me think where have all the years gone. I can’t quite believe it.”

Speaking as part of our back to school special, Pippa also shared how she is getting prepared for the back to school season.

“On my end, I’m getting organized by getting the books online (there’s only 3! The cuteness) my sisters youngest Sam is starting in September too so it’s nice to have her to bounce things off. We have ordered them name tags online for their clothes and books. I never knew you could get iron-on name tags! I remember my mum sewing ours on all those years ago.”
