UK broadcasters have introduced a new plan which legally requires “distinctly British” programmes to be produced.
The examples of the “distinctly British” programmes they mean include Only Fools and Horses, Fleabag and Derry Girls.
But not everyone was happy with Derry Girls being included on that list… Derry Girls actress Siobhán McSweeney has spoken her mind on the matter.
She took to Twitter to set things straight writing, “Derry Girls is made by a British company and aired by a British channel. But it’s not a ‘distinctively British’ programme. But what would I know?”.

The show follows a group of friends living in Derry during the troubles in the 90’s.
The program, which will now be on season three, was majorly set back due to the Covid-19 pandemic but this week it’s been revealed that they will soon be back on set.
One of the stars of the show, Ian McElhinney shared this week with The Belfast Telegraph that the plan is they will be back filming at the end of September.
He shared; “It’ll be great and we’ll be delighted to see it back because it’s still in people’s hearts a little bit which is nice.”
Filming for the show’s much anticipated third season was supposed to begin back in early 2020 but was unable to due to the pandemic.
Now it’s hoped filming will wrap up by Christmas and we could have it back on our screens by spring of next year!
