Saoirse Ronan’s directorial debut to compete at Venice Film Festival

Is there anything Saoirse Ronan can’t do?

She’s set to star in an upcoming film, Bad Apples, where she plays a burnt-out primary school teacher.

And now she will make her directorial debut in Paper Plane.

The film will premiere at Venice International Film Festival later this year. It will compete along with fifteen other films for the Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film in September.

The film stars Kin star Clare Dunne as well as Martha Malone and Tim Creed.

Saoirse is not just directing the film, she also wrote it.

It’ll be a busy September for Saoirse, as her next film Bad Apples will hit cinemas that month as well.

The film is based on Rasmus Andersson’s 2020 novel De oönskade (The Unwanted).

Saoirse stars as Maria, a primary school teacher, who wants to inspire her students as best she can.

However, that’s easier said than done as one unruly student, Danny, tries to get in her way.

After finding Danny outside the school one night, Maria brings him into her home. However, when he absolutely destroys her home, she is left with no choice but to lock him in her home.

When she realises that her class is flourishing without the disruptive student and the rest of his peers don’t seem to miss him, she is faces a predicament.

A search party is assembled to find the missing child. But will Maria feel guilty and confess to where Danny is? Or will she take the easy win with her classroom and become the teacher she always wanted to be?

Saoirse will be joined by Jacob Anderson, Sean Gilder, Reiki Ayola, Robert Emms, Kerry Howard, Danny Iqbal, Nia Brown and Joanna van Kampen.
