Radio DJ, Dermot Whelan reunites with his Mum who is battling dementia

Today FM DJ, Dermot Whelan has opened up about his Mum who is battling dementia. Dermot revealed that this has been particularly difficult over the past few months, as with lockdown he was unable to visit her as she was cocooning.

However, he has recently been reunited with his Mum for the first time since February; “With her illness, I haven’t been able to spend time with her in person so this was the first time since February, that’s been hard.”

“I think this lockdown has shown us that time is precious. And the clock is ticking.”

“For anyone who has an elderly person in their life, mum, grandparent, we just want to spend time together but when it is safe.”

“I just count myself lucky that we got through it and I can see her now.”

“There are a lot of people in similar situations who couldn’t and they lost someone before they could say goodbye.”

“Everybody has their own hardship tales coming out of lockdown- whether it is losing someone, a financial hardship, mental health, not being able to see someone, being isolated yourself.”

Whilst in lockdown the comedian and DJ did not rest on his laurels, instead he’s been working on a TV show which is all about lockdown called Socially Distant.

The program; “was filmed in lockdown, but starts out before it kicked in.” Expect there to be lots of bad haircuts, banana bread jokes and hilarious Zoom calls.

The show is on RTE One tonight at 10.35pm.
