In August 2018, Gareth decided to take a step away from his radio career due to ill health.
The Classic Hits presenter was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy, which he previously described as “a very rare neuro-degenerative disease that attacks and destroys the body’s central nervous system.”
Gareth said, “Sadly it’s incurable and progressive. [It’s] time to do battle with this beast and fight it for as long as I can.”
He decided to leave the station, spend time with his nearest and dearest and “make a few happy memories for the future.”
Speaking of his time at 4FM, he said, “I’ve been blessed to have a job I’ve loved all my life.
“I’ll leave the radio with lots of great memories and I’ll keep talking about them hopefully for years to come.”
