Nicola Coughlan compares the Met Gala to “an Irish wake” as she opens up about her experience at the event

Nicola Coughlan’s roles in Derry Girls and Bridgerton have made her an international star. So much so, that she received an invite to the prestigious Met Gala hosted by Vogue.

But now the Galway girl is opening up about the experience, telling Ray D’arcy on RTÉ Radio One, all about her time at fashion’s biggest night out.

Nicola revealed that the night went well, and even though it was far from home, taking place in New York, everything felt very Irish. Especially considering the first person she saw at the gala was Kildare man Paul Mescal.

Explaining; “Absolutely classic – of course you see the Irish person first. We’re like a pair of J1ers.”

Both her and Normal People star Paul felt a little bit weird at the event, but Nicola soon learned it was normal to feel that way.

“But honestly I think probably most people at things like that find it weird that they’re there, If you didn’t, I’d worry about you to be honest.”

Her and Paul did have quite a different experience though. He was their with his girlfriend Phoebe Bridgers, and co-star Daisy Edgar Jones, but Nicola had to face the event by herself.

And connecting with the Maynooth man wasn’t the only Irish aspect of the event.

“It’s sort of like an Irish wake, you go in and you meet Anna Wintour and the co-chairs and you shake hands.” the actress explained.

Nicola also teased an upcoming project.

Addressing rumours she would appear in the latest installment of Doctor Who starring Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa, the Bridgerton star revealed; “I am not the new companion – but I am working on something with Ncuti”

However it’s all very hush hush as she explained; “I can’t say what it is, but it’s not Doctor Who. That’s definite.”
