Martine McCutcheon reminisces about “ultimate dream” Love Actually

Have you watched Love Actually yet?

No, then what are you waiting for!

We’re firmly in the Christmas spirit at VIP HQ and in honour of that we caught up with Martine McCutcheon AKA Natalie in the iconic Christmas movie.

She revealed to us that it was her “ultimate dream” to appear in the movie as she chatted at the launch of the One4all Gift Card Christmas campaign.

“My dream when I was a kid when I saw Four Weddings and a Funeral was to work with Richard Curtis and Hugh Grant. I wanted to make a film like that with those guys. That was my ultimate dream,” she admits with a wide smile.

“I still pinch myself and I still can’t believe that I was part of that movie,” she adds.

She admits that she had no idea that the film would be as iconic as it became today. it’s beyond her wildest dreams that the film became a Christmas classic that is now passed through generations.

“It amazes me that maybe [my son] Rafferty’s children or his children’s children, should he have them, might see their grandma in this movie. Or when I’m gone. It’s pretty powerful,” she tells us.

“I can be very sceptical, but even for me, that movie makes me believe in the good stuff and I think love is the closest thing to magic that we get and we need more of it.”

Of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t ask – could there be a sequel on the cards?

“I think that Richard’s main passion is to try and make the world a better place, and I think that he did that through the film. I think when he did the reunion for Comic Relief, that was the closest we were going to get to another film.”

The cast reunited in 2017 for Red Nose Day to raise money for charity in a short film that showed us where they were over a decade later.

This year, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy, Laura Linney and Thomas Brodie-Sangster came together for a special interview to mark two decades of Love Actually.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. People love the film so much, so I don’t think he’ll want to touch it. I think he’ll just want it to be this piece that speaks for itself, that still is standing the test of time.”

“Unless it was something that was going to raise so much money for one of his charities… He’s looking at a far bigger picture than making movies. He’s such a good man, and he really does make a difference in this world… But I mean, you’d have to ask him!” Martine laughs.

And if all the stars were to align and that all happened, would she come back as Natalie?

Martine McCutcheon

“I think it would depend on the script, on the story, making sure that all the people that made all the magic the last time were part of it again… It was a really special, gorgeous experience and I think that oozed on the screen. So it would just need to be right.”

“Filming is so demanding, and I’ve got my one son who I want to spend as much time enjoying as I can, so I try to make my work work around that as much as I can. Also, people like Emma Thompson and Laura Linney are constantly working and filming, so I think they’d have to make sure that it was absolutely 100 per cent right.”

“If the boxes were ticked, I would absolutely love to do another film. If we felt like it could be something really amazing, then I think yeah it would be beautiful to do.”
