Well-known Ireland AM chef, Joe Shannon has sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Shannon, who was in his late 50s and from Sligo, revealed last year he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

He was initially diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer in March 2021 and started treatment, before they found another tumour on his liver.

Previously speaking to his colleagues Muireann O’Connell and Alan Hughes on Ireland AM, Joe explained: “I ended up with a second bout of surgery and unfortunately I had a lot of complications after that.

“I spent a month in hospital, I was in ICU, I had been given the last rites. My mother appeared to me that night, I think she was there to tell me my time wasn’t yet.”

After receiving treatment and getting the all-clear, a few months later Joe’s cancer had unfortunately returned.

Joe then received chemotherapy which ultimately failed to kill the cancer cells with doctors informing the 58-year-old that his cancer was terminal.

The Ireland AM team shared the news on Instagram and paid tribute to their beloved colleague, beginning their post by saying: “We’ve some sad news to share today as our much-loved Chef and friend Joe Shannon passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family in Sligo.”

“He inspired us and so many viewers with his positive outlook, often stating that he felt lucky to have had a good life.

“Our condolences go out to his wife, Marie, his children Orla, Emer, Joseph and extended family.

“We will be remembering Joe tomorrow morning on IrelandAM.”
