Home of the Year: Judges clash over wallpaper

The Home of the Year judges all have their own personal tastes.

And sometimes those tastes clash, like this week.

Sara Cosgrove and Hugh Wallace butted heads when it came to wallpaper. We mean what else!

Take a look inside the homes!

Marie and Kieran, Wicklow

This Georgian Granite House was the property that saw the judges butt heads.

The home is approximately 100 years old, and though it was in need of some repair, the couple fell in love with its original features and set about creating a wonderful family home.

One of the rooms was covered in green and gold, that included a green wallpaper that covered the bottom of the walls.

“The reason for that was Georgians loved wallpaper and the little gold was to protect the wallpaper because wallpapers were so expensive,” Hugh explained.

He admitted that he would like to see more of the wallpaper to which Sara was quick to shoot down.

“I do think they’ve got the proportion of the wallpaper right here. I think if that had come up it would have felt quite enclosing.”

Craig and Matthew, Waterford

The judges fell in love with this gorgeous Waterford home.

Craig and Matthew have a keen interest in Danish design and the retro Mad Men styling of the mid-century era and favoured simplistic and clean lines of contemporary living and pops of colour adding natural greenery throughout the home.

The couple rebuilt the cottage, adding a two-story extension that seriously impressed the judges.

The three judges fell in love with the polished concrete floor in the entranceway, however, Amanda Bone was unimpressed that there were so many different floor finishes.

However, Hugh was quick to point out that having a concrete floor in the bedroom was a “no no”.

Despite this, the house seriously impressed the judges and saw them award the house 27 points, bringing the house into the final.

Lynne and Alan, Galway

Lynne and Alan live in a period townhouse in Galway with their triplets.

The home is approximately 100 years old, and though it was in need of some repair, the couple fell in love with its original features and set about creating a wonderful family home.

The home was filled with dramatic prints in contrast to the neutral wall colouring.

Sara thought that the house is a “masterclass” in how to execute trends.

She added that the interior was “so perfectly balanced”.
