Former Oscar winner, Halle Berry was rooting for Ruth Negga to take home the coveted Best Actress award for a very poignant reason.

The Irish-Ethiopian actress was nominated for her portrayal of Mildred Loving in historical drama Loving, and she looked stunning as she took to the red carpet at last night’s ceremony in a custom Valentino lace mock-neck maxi dress.

Unfortunately for Ruth, she lost out on the award to the talented Emma Stone for her role in La La Land – but the 35-year-old might find comfort in the fact that she had an A-list supporter rooting for her all the way.

Speaking to Michael Strahan on the ABC Oscars pre-show red carpet, Halle said she would like Ruth to win the Best Actress Oscar, so she could join her in history by becoming the second black actress to win the award.

Halle took home the trophy in 2002 for her leading role in Monster’s Ball, and she believes diversity in film has improved over the past number of years, even if she is still the first and so far only African American woman to win the Best Actress Oscar.

“I like to believe that all those moments when one of us goes matters.” she said.

“I do think things are changing, maybe not as fast as we’d like them to, but if we look at it as a whole, things are progressing and changing.”

Hard luck Ruth, we’re still so proud of you!
